Life will throw some curveballs at you, but that’s OK.

When you’re a kid, life seems like this obstacle-free paradise. You feel like you can do anything you want and have everything in the world handed to you on a silver platter. Unfortunately, that’s not how adulthood works at all.

Life throws curveballs at every corner, sometimes multiple times per day, and it can be hard to track them all. When one thing goes wrong in your life, it seems like everything else follows suit: relationships fall apart, and jobs don’t work out as planned; sometimes, people get hurt because they were too naïve about how much effort something would take (like when Thanos tries to create an Infinity Gauntlet).

This is why we need heroes like Captain America, who remind us that our struggles are worth fighting through because there’s always hope for tomorrow.

You can’t permanently save everyone.

This is a lesson that many of us have to learn the hard way, as we do when our favorite TV show gets canceled or when Spider-Man 2 gets pushed back from May 3rd to July 3rd of next year. Sometimes, you’ll be fighting for your life against Doctor Octopus and realize that saving everyone in New York City would require more spider powers than you’ve. And even if you did manage to save the day, there’s no guarantee that your efforts would result in an ending where Peter Parker lives happily ever after with Mary Jane Watson (spoiler alert: they don’t).

It’s OK to admit that sometimes there are things beyond our control. We can’t permanently save everyone, but we can still impact this world. We can still make changes in our communities, whether big or small, whether they involve stopping supervillains from destroying Manhattan or just making sure this article has enough pictures of Deadpool looking cool with his guns drawn.

Family isn’t always related by blood.

When it comes to family, Marvel Comics has something of a reputation for being a little weird. There are plenty of examples in their universe where the traditional family unit is… well, not reasonably what you’d expect.

When it comes to comic book families, the most notable example is probably the X-Men. Professor Charles Xavier and his wife (and fellow telepath) Raven Darkholme were both mutants with powers over other minds, they could control others’ bodies with their thoughts and emotions.

But even outside the X-Men universe, there are plenty more examples of unconventional familial relationships: Rocket Raccoon’s adoptive father Groot; Gamora and Nebula; Wolverine’s relationship with his sidekick Jubilee; even Carol Danvers herself has recently been revealed to have an estranged sister named Kara Zor-L who shares her superpowers but not her memories.

Going out of your way to help others has its rewards.

One of the best ways to find purpose in life is by helping others. When you give of yourself without expecting anything in return, it can be gratifying. You may even build new friendships with the people you help or discover opportunities for growth in your own life.

So, for example, if you’re looking for an exciting career path but aren’t sure what you want to do with your life yet, why not see if there are any job openings at a local charity? That way, instead of just sitting around waiting for an opportunity to knock on your door (which could take years), you can start doing something good today that could lead directly towards the kind of work environment where YOU thrive.

You don’t need money or status to be a hero.

You don’t have to be rich or famous to be a hero.

As you may know, comics are full of  super-powered characters  with billion-dollar bank accounts and the ability to bend reality. However, they’re also full of regular people, the kind that could be your neighbor or coworker, who step up when it matters most.

Though these characters often start as the average joe, they can quickly grow into something more through dedication and hard work. This means that yes, being a superhero requires some luck, but it also requires being willing to put in the hard work necessary for success. If you want to save the world from evil aliens or mad scientists, there’s no reason why you can’t do so while still holding down a job and paying your bills like everyone else.

I hope this article has given you some food for thought and encouragement when it comes to your own life. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that life is a lot like comic books. You never know what will happen next, you must keep moving forward until you reach your happy ending.
